Helen Haines, an independent Australian lawmaker representing Indi in Victoria state, remains in critical condition after being deliberately struck by a car outside her office in Wangaratta on October 19. The incident occurred around 3:30 PM when she was reportedly unloading items from the boot of her car and sustained severe lower body injuries. A 43-year-old man has been arrested for intentionally causing serious injury; however, police have not disclosed a motive. Haines, who is 65 years old, had both legs amputated due to her injuries and was described by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as a respected independent member. The attack led to increased security measures when Parliament resumed on October 26.
