A nine-story city office building at 100 Gold St. in Manhattan’s Financial District is set to be demolished and replaced with a massive-scale development that could redefine New York City's skyline, according to the City Reporter on October 5. The project, a collaboration between the Economic Development Corporation and GFP Real Estate, proposes two towers joined by a podium base housing 4,000 apartments. One tower could stand at 78 stories, while the other may reach up to 115 stories, similar in height to the Empire State Building.
During a Community Board meeting, board member Patrick Kennell questioned if this project would be the most densely populated building in New York City's history. Brian Steinwurtzel, CEO and principal of GFP Development, responded that there are already many buildings in the Financial District with comparable density. Despite initial skepticism from local residents and community boards regarding the sheer scale and number of units, the proposal is moving forward.
