A landfill fire at ECCO Recycling in southern Calgary, Alberta, has been burning for over a week, with smoke affecting nearby communities. Mayor Jeromy Farkas and Ward 11 Councillor Rob Ward have requested that the provincial government release detailed air quality data, which is expected to be made public soon. The fire covers an estimated one million cubic metres of material, equivalent to up to eight Canadian Football League fields, making it challenging for firefighters who are using dirt and water to smother the flames. Calgary Fire Chief Steve Dongworth warns that the blaze could persist for weeks or even months until all on-site fire risks are mitigated.
