A 65-year-old South African woman, Janine Lochrenberg, died on Tuesday after being attacked by a shark off KuGompo City (formerly East London) in South Africa's Eastern Cape province. Lochrenberg was swimming with an open water swimming club when she was bitten on her thigh and upper arm; fellow swimmers attempted to bring her to shore but believed she had bled out before reaching safety. The attack occurred around 08:00 local time, prompting the closure of two nearby beaches by municipal authorities. Lochrenberg's sister Margot told the BBC that despite knowing about an elevated shark presence in East London, Janine loved swimming and was out for her daily morning swim at the time of the incident. Shark attacks are rare in South Africa, with fewer than 10 fatal incidents since 2012 according to the Florida Museum's International Shark Attack File.
