On October 22, 2026, a 74-year-old antiques dealer from Kyneton, Victoria, was fined $10,000 after pleading guilty to multiple charges related to illegal possession and sale of protected wildlife. The raid in April 2025 by the state’s Conservation Regulator uncovered over 700 dead native animals, including 78 emus, 42 brushtail possums, and 26 echidnas. Additionally, officials found 15 live reptiles, six of which were in poor welfare conditions. The magistrate criticized the dealer for flouting wildlife laws despite his intelligence and knowledge about wildlife conservation. Victoria Animal Justice party MP Georgie Purcell called for modernizing the Wildlife Act 1975 to strengthen protection against such illegal activities.
