On January 28, 2023, during an English Premier League match between Newcastle United and Everton FC, Tyrone Mings of Aston Villa accidentally scored an own goal when attempting to clear the ball. The ball then ricocheted off a defender and was headed into the net by Calvert-Lewin, who was positioned near the goal. This unforeseen event significantly altered the course of the game, contributing to Everton's victory over Newcastle United. While Calvert-Lewin did not initially touch the ball directly, his positioning allowed him to take advantage of Mings' mistake, turning what would have been a Newcastle own goal into an Everton score.
