As of Wednesday morning, a chemical tank explosion at MC Tank Terminal in Toledo, Ohio, prompted mass evacuations for residents within a 1-mile radius and shelter-in-place orders for those within a 3-mile radius. The affected area includes roughly 265,000 residents. Officials identified the leaking chemical as glycidyl methacrylate, an industrial coating product that can irritate skin, eyes, nose, and mouth upon contact. Evacuation orders were issued around 10:48 p.m. Tuesday, while shelter-in-place instructions followed at 4:24 a.m. Wednesday. The explosion caused thick fog and haze across the city, with a strong plastic-like scent reported by local residents. Shoreland Elementary School served as a temporary reception center for displaced individuals, alongside designated areas like parking lots with emergency services on standby.
