On October 21, 2026, a 56-year-old man was arrested for allegedly threatening staff at Hannah Beazley's electorate office in Victoria Park, Perth, while armed with what were described as nunchucks. The incident occurred just days after federal MP Helen Haines was hospitalized following an attack outside her office in Wangaratta, Victoria. Police arrived promptly and found the man nearby in Bentley, charging him with being armed in a way that may cause fear, making unlawful threats, and possessing cannabis. Beazley's focus shifted to the welfare of her staff, who were shaken by the incident. The man, identified as John Lawrence Smart, appeared in court where his lawyer suggested he might have been holding drumsticks rather than weapons. Police chief Col Blanch stated that while the attacker was known to them, politicians should not be deterred from public life due to general security concerns.
