Jennifer Gonzalez, a 43-year-old U.S. citizen from Massachusetts, has been arrested and charged by the Department of Justice for masterminding a $6 million marriage fraud scheme over the past decade. Alongside Gonzalez, five other women were also charged: Amara Pugh, Erica Daniels, Cherice Alejandro, Jessica Tavares, and Jalyn Hill. Each arranged up to 20 sham marriages annually at a cost of $38,000 to $40,000 per couple, helping immigrants obtain legal status in the U.S.
The arrests were made on Wednesday morning when five suspects appeared before federal court later that day; all face charges including marriage fraud and harboring illegal aliens. According to U.S. Attorney Leah Foley, Gonzalez orchestrated these fraudulent marriages, with some of her employees participating multiple times. Prosecutors claim that Gonzalez boasted about investing the proceeds in businesses and property in the Dominican Republic.
This scheme involved arranging fake weddings complete with exchanged wedding rings and staged photos to make it appear legitimate. The arrests highlight efforts by federal authorities to combat marriage fraud undermining legal immigration processes.
