El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele announced on October 21 that he had launched a military operation to rescue four Salvadoran aviation technicians kidnapped by Haitian gangs. The technicians went missing after their armored vehicle was ambushed and set on fire in the Santo area of Croix-des-Bouquets, near Port-au-Prince, Haiti, three days earlier while they were returning from a market trip. El Salvador deployed 100 special forces soldiers to Haiti on October 22 to assist with the rescue mission.
On October 24, the New York Times reported that bodies believed to be those of the missing Salvadoran technicians had been found outside Port-au-Prince and were handed over to a Salvadoran military team. The remains were badly burned, requiring autopsies for identification. President Bukele warned earlier in his X post (formerly Twitter) that if the hostages were not returned alive and unharmed, there would be a more forceful response.
