A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Tibet on October 21, 2026, at around 10:33 p.m. local time, killing at least 16 people, injuring 76, and collapsing over 300 homes in Nagqu, a city in northern Tibet approximately 400 km northeast of Lhasa. The epicenter was located near Baqen County at an elevation of about 4,864 meters above sea level. Rescue operations are ongoing amidst concerns over aftershocks and potential rockslides. President Xi Jinping ordered an "all-out" rescue effort to minimize casualties and treat the injured. This quake follows a series of natural disasters in the region, including a glacier collapse near the Nepal border that killed at least 1,400 people two months prior.
