Chief Raoni Metuktire, a prominent Brazilian Indigenous leader known for his efforts to protect Indigenous rights and the Amazon rain forest, has been diagnosed with "aggressive cancer" of the digestive system at age 94. The diagnosis came after he was hospitalized in São Paulo on June 19 due to persistent abdominal pain from an advanced-stage tumor causing an intestinal obstruction. Following surgery for the obstruction, Chief Raoni was placed under palliative care. He has been a key figure in Indigenous rights movements since the 1980s, working alongside influential figures such as Sting and world leaders to raise awareness about environmental preservation.
