On October 25, 2026, Portuguese police cleared a housing protest camp from Rossio Square in Lisbon's city center, arresting more than 30 demonstrators and dismantling over 100 tents. Police used batons and dogs to disperse the protesters early Sunday morning after warning them their encampment would be removed if not vacated voluntarily. The operation also resulted in minor injuries to both officers and protesters, with police reporting seven incidents but activists claiming 60 injured. A smaller protest camp was dismantled in Porto's Praca D Joao I square, where six arrests were made. Protesters set up the camps following a large march on Saturday that drew thousands of people protesting Portugal's housing crisis, which has seen home prices more than double since 2017 and rents nearly double for new leases.
