Matteo Salvini, leader of Italy's far-right League party and part of the ruling coalition, secured his reappointment on October 25 despite declining poll ratings. Salvini was reelected with about two-thirds of the votes from 705 delegates at an extraordinary congress he called in September to shore up his authority ahead of next year’s general election. His sole opponent, Massimo Garavaglia, received only one-fifth of the votes. Salvini vowed to push for Italy to stop financial support and weapon shipments to Ukraine, citing economic difficulties. He plans to prioritize the approval of Italy's 2027-2029 budget bill on Tuesday. Since taking over in 2013, Salvini helped the League achieve a record 34% vote share in the 2019 European Parliament election. Recent polls show the League below 5%, trailing behind coalition ally Forza Italia and National Future.
