On October 29, 2026, Ian Choudri, CEO of California’s high-speed rail project, abruptly resigned after a series of scandals, including misuse of public funds and personal legal troubles. The total cost of the project has escalated to over $231 billion for what was initially planned as a $33 billion endeavor by 2020, but it still hasn't laid any track. Choudri cited "important personal and family priorities" in his resignation letter obtained by Cal Matters. The California High-Speed Rail Authority paid out nearly $600,000 for unauthorized travel expenses for consultants, including visits to nightclubs and escape rooms. Following Choudri's departure, Joe Stephenshaw, a longtime advisor to Governor Gavin Newsom, was appointed interim CEO by the board on October 30. The new leadership aims to bring stronger accountability and transparency to the beleaguered project.
