The Russian independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta announced on October 30 that it will cease operations and close its office by November 9 due to increasing pressure from authorities. Editor-in-chief Sergei Sokolov cited recent searches at his home and the detention of journalist Oleg Roldugin earlier in April as contributing factors. The paper has been one of the last outlets openly critical of Moscow's war in Ukraine, leading to relentless repression targeting its journalists over years, including murders and arrests. Novaya Gazeta accused Russian security agencies, such as the FSB (successor agency to the Soviet-era KGB), of effectively "privatizing" state functions to stifle free press. This closure marks a significant blow to independent journalism in Russia.
