As of October 30, 2026, Defiantly, an Irish import and expected pace-maker for the Melbourne Cup, was scratched from the race after failing a veterinary inspection due to sensitivity in its hind foot. The five-year-old gelding, trained by Joseph O’Brien, had been anticipated to set a challenging pace in the 3200m race at Flemington on Tuesday, turning it into a grueling test of stamina. Purchased specifically for the Melbourne Cup by Australian Bloodstock earlier in the year and part-owned by media personalities Yvonne Sampson and her husband Chris O’Keefe, Defiantly's withdrawal has left dozens of owners and their families devastated. The scratching means that another Joseph O’Brien runner, Kizlyar, will now be included in the starting 24 horses for the race. Racing Victoria vets were unable to pass Defiantly fit to run after two rounds of inspections.
