On September 15, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth signed a letter of intent in Washington aimed at deepening defense cooperation between weapons manufacturers from both countries. The agreement is intended to enhance mutual capacity for joint development, production, licensed manufacturing, and maintenance of critical defense systems like the Patriot missile and Tomahawk cruise missiles. Pistorius emphasized that while Germany would increase its purchases of U.S. weapons, such as the Tomahawk missiles, this move was not meant to make Germany overly reliant on the United States but rather to foster a more balanced partnership between NATO allies. The deal comes at a time when defense stockpiles have been depleted due to conflicts like those in Ukraine and Iran, highlighting the strategic need for shared capacity-building efforts.
