As of November 3, 2026, the Indian navy freed an Iranian fishing boat and its crew of 20 people from Somali pirates after a 48-hour operation in the Arabian Sea. The vessel, named Azini, was hijacked on October 29, 2026, off northeastern Somalia between the coastal towns of Bandar Bayla and Hafun by 12 pirates. According to an official from the Puntland Maritime Police Force, Indian forces disarmed the pirates, confiscated their mobile phones, and released them without further action.
The hijacking raised concerns about a resurgence in Somali piracy along the Gulf of Aden and western Indian Ocean, with warnings that the seized vessel could serve as a base for additional attacks on commercial shipping lanes. The rescue operation was conducted approximately 3,000 kilometers from Mumbai, India's financial capital.
