On November 3, 2026, Sen.-elect Abdul El-Sayed, D-Mich., said he would support Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., if Van Hollen chooses to challenge Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., for the post of majority leader in the next Congress. Schumer has led Democrats in the Senate for years, both when they were in the majority and minority. Some progressives have expressed discontent with Schumer's leadership despite the party's recent landslide midterm wins on November 7, 2026. El-Sayed told CNN that he thinks Van Hollen would be an "amazing" leader but also hinted that Van Hollen might prefer to run for president instead. As of now, Schumer is expected to seek re-election as majority leader and does not face any declared challengers.
