Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) has confirmed that he does not plan to challenge Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) for the position after Democrats regained control of the Senate in recent midterms. Instead, Van Hollen is considering a run for president in 2028. Sen.-elect Abdul El-Sayed (D-Mich.), who has previously backed Van Hollen as an alternative to Schumer, also expressed support for him becoming Senate majority leader but acknowledged that it's ultimately up to Van Hollen's decision. Despite criticism from some progressives, Schumer is set for re-election in 2028.
