On September 16, the US paid $725 million to the United Nations (UN), reducing its significant debt. Additionally, on Friday, $102 million was received for peacekeeping efforts. The UN still awaits an additional $1.312 billion, but with these payments, the US avoids losing its voting rights in the upcoming UN General Assembly meeting scheduled for next week, according to Article 19 of the UN Charter which penalizes members with arrears exceeding two years' worth of fees. President Trump had previously criticized the UN and reduced funding to many agencies, but this payment was made contingent on ongoing reforms at the organization.
