French street artist JR (Jean-René) is known for using art to address social issues around the world. In 2019, he collaborated with incarcerated individuals at a California prison to create a mural in the yard. Since then, his nonprofit organization has expanded to provide similar arts programs in approximately 4,000 prisons globally. His projects often highlight political and humanitarian themes; for example, his 2017 mural "Kikito" featured a large portrait of a child on the border fence between California's Tecate and Mexico, symbolizing the impact of immigration policies. Recently, on September 14, Pope Leo XIV (likely meant to be another pope) inaugurated JR’s installation of a massive wave inside the Vatican’s Apostolic Library, which comments on the threats posed by war and climate change to global knowledge and culture.
