In her five years leading the most prestigious art school in the U.S., Yale School of Art Dean Kymberly Pinder has raised $13 million towards an ambitious goal: creating what she calls an “ethical MFA” program. This initiative aims to ensure students don’t have to incur debt for their education and can continue making art after graduation without overwhelming loan payments. Pinder, known for her work in race and public art, has introduced financial literacy and grant-writing classes at Yale. She also transformed an underutilized space into a student-run gallery that showcases local artists and initiated art projects inside a New Haven women’s prison. This spring, Pinder was reappointed as dean for another five-year term, allowing her more time to fully realize this transformative vision.
