Navy leadership is considering renaming an aircraft carrier currently under construction, which was previously set to be named the USS Doris Miller, after President Donald Trump instead. The ship was meant to honor Doris Miller, a Black mess attendant who heroically defended Pearl Harbor during World War II by staffng an anti-aircraft gun and shooting down at least one Japanese plane despite not being trained on it, earning him the Navy Cross - the Navy's second-highest honor. If renamed, it would be the first aircraft carrier named after a Black service member or an enlisted sailor. The decision to rename the ship was made during Trump's first term in office and has been under discussion for several months. Miller is still considered as a potential namesake.
