South African investigative journalist Micah Reddy, the Africa editor for the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), has gone missing in Djibouti. His family reported that he was last heard from on Saturday, around 1 p.m. local time, and since then, no information about his whereabouts has been received from authorities. Reddy arrived in Djibouti on Thursday for a reporting trip but had not been focusing on issues specific to the country itself.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) expressed concern over the lack of updates more than 24 hours after Reddy's last known contact and called on Djiboutian authorities to confirm his safety and release him if detained. CPJ Africa Director Angela Quintal urged for urgent action to establish Reddy’s location and ensure his well-being.
Reddy’s brother, Niall, stated that Micah had been in regular communication with family and colleagues before going silent, raising alarm among those who know him. The incident highlights the risks journalists face while reporting from volatile regions, emphasizing the need for transparency and support from local governments regarding press safety.
