Kaja Kallas, the European Union's foreign policy chief, stated at the United Nations that the EU's Aspides naval mission in the Red Sea needs more than 10 warships to effectively protect shipping from threats posed by Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis. Currently, there are only six warships involved in the operation. Kallas emphasized that the situation has worsened due to recent Houthi advances along the Red Sea coast and the ongoing tensions near the Strait of Hormuz. Italy announced plans for its own naval mission, as it cannot wait for a larger EU response to address the crisis. The Aspides mission was launched in 2024 to safeguard shipping routes from attacks by the Houthis, but Kallas stressed that with the current number of ships, the mission is insufficient to handle the increased threat level.
