On Thursday morning, a 31-year-old Ukrainian national attacked five people with a knife at a 17th-century Benedictine abbey in Jaroslaw, Poland. The attacker entered the abbey from Germany earlier that day and killed one person (identified as a priest by Polish media) while wounding four others, including three clergy members and two laypeople. Prosecutors charged Ihor M., whose full name was withheld under privacy law, with murder, attempted murder, and intentional bodily harm; he faces life imprisonment if convicted. The motive for the attack remains unclear. Two of the injured are in critical but stable condition, while others have recovered sufficiently to leave hospital care. The suspect had reportedly grabbed a kitchen knife at the abbey before launching his assault and was heading toward a border crossing back into Ukraine but instead attacked the abbey’s occupants.
