Slinger Francisco, known as the Mighty Sparrow and dubbed the “calypso king of the world,” died at age 91 on Sunday in New York. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family after a brief illness. Born in Grand Roy, Grenada, in July 1935, he moved to Trinidad and Tobago as a toddler where he became famous for his calypso music starting with the hit song "Jean and Dinah" in 1956. The Mighty Sparrow is celebrated for hits like "Both of Them," "Congo Man," and others that helped spread calypso globally from its birthplace, Trinidad and Tobago. His contributions to music earned him honors such as an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the University of the West Indies in 1987.
