Ex-footballer Joey Barton, 44, might lose special jail privileges after anti-corruption officers found a mobile phone and tobacco in his cell at HMP Liverpool. The former Manchester City, QPR, and Newcastle midfielder was charged with grievous bodily harm (GBH) for an alleged assault that occurred on March 8, 2026, at the Huyton and Prescot golf club, which costs members £1,440 annually. Barton denies the charges but faces up to six more months in jail if convicted of causing GBH with intent against 51-year-old Kevin Lynch, who sustained severe eye injuries during the incident. The discovery of contraband could further complicate his situation inside prison, potentially stripping him of privileges he currently enjoys.
