On September 29, Slovakia's parliamentary coalition faced a significant challenge when Deputy Prime Minister and Environment Minister Tomas Taraba was dismissed by the parliament. Taraba had been part of the far-right Slovak National Party (SNS), which is a junior member in the leftist-nationalist coalition led by Prime Minister Robert Fico’s Smer-Slovak Social Democracy (Smer-SSD). The motion to remove him won 77 votes, just one short of half the 150-member parliament. This development raised doubts about the government's stability and prompted discussions within Fico’s party for potential coalition reforms or even an early election in January if a supermajority agrees. The coalition currently depends on several loyal independents to maintain its control over 78 seats, highlighting the precarious nature of the ruling alliance.
