Civil society groups in South Africa have raised concerns about water consumption by data centers to the South African Human Rights Commission. The country already hosts 60 data centers and is facing severe drought conditions exacerbated by climate change. Large data centers can consume up to 5 million gallons of water per day, a significant strain on resources. A recent study found that generating a 10-page paper using ChatGPT-4 requires as much water as a standard washing machine cycle, or about 60 liters. Michael Marchant from the civil society group Open Secrets warns that data centers are resource-intensive and could fall through regulatory cracks, especially in an already stressed environment like Africa's.
