The European Commission suspended €18 million ($20 million) in financial aid to Sierra Leone due to the country's refusal to arrest and extradite convicted drug kingpin Jos Leijdekkers, according to Dutch Justice Minister David van Weel. Since 2023, Leijdekkers has been protected in Sierra Leone despite being sentenced in absentia to 24 years in prison by a Dutch court for smuggling over 7 metric tons of cocaine. The Netherlands demands his extradition but Sierra Leone continues to shield him from justice. Van Weel warned that another €22.5 million in aid scheduled for next year could also be suspended if Sierra Leone fails to cooperate, indicating the EU's intent to pressure Sierra Leone into taking action against Leijdekkers.
