On October 1, Omar al-Bashir, the ousted president of Sudan who was removed from power in April 2019 following months of protests, has been transferred to a military-run hospital in Khartoum for medical treatment. Bashir's lawyer, Mohamed Alhassan Alameen, stated that further care outside of Sudan is required due to his condition. The transfer comes amid an ongoing civil war between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the army since 2019, which has devastated much of the country. Bashir was previously moved from prison to a hospital in Merowe before being sent back to Khartoum for medical tests. His family had declared his need for international medical care as "critical and urgent," emphasizing the seriousness of his condition. Given that Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges including genocide, this move could draw international condemnation.
