On September 29, the Saudi-led coalition accused Houthi rebels, who are backed by Iran, of attacking a power distribution station in Medina, one of Islam's holiest cities. The attack damaged one transformer but did not affect the electricity network. The coalition claims that evidence from investigating drone wreckage confirms Houthi involvement. In response, a Houthi military source denied the accusation through the Saba news agency, calling it a “lie” aimed at covering up Saudi Arabia’s inability to substantiate earlier accusations against the Houthis.
Meanwhile, hostilities between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis have escalated since July 2023 after the Houthis declared a naval blockade on Saudi territory. The conflict has seen significant territorial gains by Houthi forces along Yemen's Red Sea coast and retaliatory air strikes by Saudi-led coalition forces in Yemen.
Pakistan, expressing solidarity with Saudi Arabia, condemned the alleged attack as a "grave provocation" against regional peace and security, reaffirming its unwavering support for the kingdom’s sovereignty.
