David Rivera, a former Florida congressman and longtime friend of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison on October 2, 2026, after being convicted of secretly lobbying on behalf of the Venezuelan government during the first Trump administration without registering as a foreign agent under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA). Rivera's conviction stemmed from a seven-week trial where he was found guilty on all counts, including conspiracy to commit money laundering. Prosecutors argued that Rivera acted on behalf of a "hostile foreign government" and received $50 million for his efforts from an American affiliate of PDVSA, Venezuela’s state-owned oil company. Despite claims by Rivera's defense team that he was working against Maduro’s regime, Judge Melissa Damian sentenced him to the maximum statutory sentence of 10 years in prison, rejecting any notion that his actions were justified.
