A trial began on April 17, 2023, in Brampton, Ontario, for Parmpal Sidhu, who is accused of being involved in one of the largest gold heists in Canadian history. The theft occurred at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport and involved the theft of 6,600 gold bars weighing over 400 kilograms with a value exceeding $20 million USD. These gold bars and foreign currency were ordered from a refinery in Zurich, Switzerland, and transported on an Air Canada flight to Toronto before being offloaded at the airport. The prosecution recently dropped charges against two other men accused in the case: Ali Raza, a jeweller suspected of knowingly receiving stolen goods, and Amit Jalota. Meanwhile, Arsalan Chaudhary admitted his role and was sentenced to four years in prison with an order to pay back $22 million USD as restitution.
