On October 5, Islamic State militants attacked a federal police site southwest of Kirkuk, killing at least one Iraqi federal policeman and wounding four others near Hawija. The attackers used semi-automatic machine guns and sniper fire against the police station, which is located about 70 km (43 miles) from Kirkuk. Security sources confirmed that Islamic State militants, who remain active in the area, carried out this assault, marking it as the first reported attack since US forces completed their withdrawal from Iraq on September 30. The United States had previously led a coalition supporting Iraqi forces against Islamic State, but now Washington plans to provide continued training and intelligence support while Iraqi forces assume full responsibility for national security.
