A 3.2 magnitude aftershock shook residents in Gippsland, Victoria, early Wednesday night, less than a week after a 4.8 magnitude quake on October 3 near Korumburra, about 100 kilometers southeast of Melbourne. Over two thousand people reported feeling the tremor, with its epicenter near Leongatha. Geoscience Australia recorded both quakes, and while no building damage or requests for assistance were reported to Victoria’s State Emergency Service after the most recent event, experts are warning of potential larger earthquakes to come. Seismology Research Centre chief scientist Adam Pascale advises residents in affected areas to prepare for future seismic activity due to an increased likelihood of equivalent or more powerful quakes shortly following a major tremor.
