Brazilian prosecutors filed a lawsuit on October 9 against Shell's subsidiary in Brazil, demanding US$108 million (S$138 million) in compensation over deadly floods that occurred in southern Brazil during April and May of 2024. The floods were caused by torrential rains, resulting in nearly 200 deaths, displacing around 500,000 people, and causing extensive damage. Prosecutors claim Shell is liable for 2% of historical global greenhouse gas emissions, making it responsible for contributing to global warming that exacerbated the extreme weather event. This marks the first time a national public prosecutor has sued an oil major over a climate disaster, highlighting the growing legal battles against companies involved in fossil fuels.
