The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative reported on October 12 that the global poverty index has risen for the first time since its creation in 2010, with an additional 51.5 million people living in "acute" poverty compared to the previous year, bringing the total number of people affected to 1.2 billion. UNDP Administrator Alexander De Croo described this increase as a “wake-up call for the world,” highlighting that these figures represent individuals facing compounded hardships including hunger, missed schooling, and inadequate access to clean water or electricity. Over half of those in acute poverty are children. The report notes that population growth is a significant factor in the rise; however, data was only available for 13 out of the 108 developing countries covered by the study. Despite the overall increase, some progress has been made: 33 nations have halved their percentage of people living in poverty according to the index since its inception.
