On October 14, 2026, Turkish police raided the headquarters of Halk TV, an opposition news channel based in Istanbul, and appointed a government trustee to oversee it. The raid came just two weeks after authorities shut down another pro-opposition digital news website, T24. Police arrested 11 people during the raid on suspicion of bribery, rigging tenders, and money laundering; they also seized companies co-owned or managed by Halk TV's chairman Cafer Mahiroğlu. The channel’s live broadcasts were halted around 6:30 AM (0330 GMT), replaced with pre-recorded material. This raid occurred on the same day that jailed Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu was due to begin his defense against corruption charges in court, adding a politically sensitive dimension to the incident. Rights groups and Western countries have criticized Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s government for its ongoing crackdown on press freedom and deteriorating human rights record.
