Chuck Schumer, the Senate Democratic leader, on October 19 urged the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to reject a petition from the conservative group Club for Growth to allow political AI-generated robocalls before the November midterm elections. The comment period for the petition expired on October 19, allowing the FCC to take action this week. Schumer warned that under such changes, campaigns could misuse their opponents' voices in messages that are misleading or outright false. The Club for Growth’s president, David McIntosh, had earlier stated that his group seeks the same treatment for political speech as is currently given to calls about package deliveries, bank accounts, and doctor's appointments.
