Etihad Airways’ chief executive, Antonoaldo Neves, stated that due to intense competition among Middle Eastern airlines, rising jet fuel costs are not being passed on to customers yet. Speaking at the Arabian Travel Market conference in Dubai, Neves noted that the aviation market in the region is the most competitive globally, making it difficult for carriers like Etihad Airways, Emirates, and Qatar Airways to increase ticket prices despite soaring fuel costs above US$100 a barrel. The conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran has affected regional operations and demand, but Neves emphasized that changes in student visas for the US and Canada have had more impact on air travel during July and August than the conflict itself. Etihad is hedged at about 60% until year-end to manage costs.
