James Talarico, a Democrat, won the U.S. Senate race in Texas on November 1, defeating Republican Ken Paxton, who is embroiled in multiple legal and ethical scandals. The victory marks the first time since 1988 that a Democrat has been elected to the Senate from Texas. This historic win could shift control of Congress during Donald Trump's presidency and reflects widespread voter discontent, particularly over ICE tactics and corruption allegations against Paxton. Talarico, an ex-teacher and seminarian known for his progressive views on religion and politics, secured more votes than expected despite heavy funding from billionaire Elon Musk backing Paxton's campaign.
Democrats made sweeping gains in state governments during the midterm elections, taking control of several legislatures and shifting the balance of power across some battleground and historically Republican-leaning states.
The party took full control — both statehouse chambers and governors’ offices — in Minnesota and Wisconsin and could pick up more states to earn additional trifectas.
Democrats succeeded in flipping control of both chambers of the Legislature in battleground Wisconsin, breaking a 16-year Republican majority, and retained the governor’s office.
Democrats will also hold at least 28 governorships in 2027, with pickups in Georgia, Iowa, Ohio and Texas — states long held by Republicans.
