The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported on September 17 that migrant arrivals to Europe via the sea have decreased by about 39% so far in 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, with around 60,000 migrants reaching European shores versus approximately 98,000 last year. Despite this drop, the death toll for those attempting the journey has increased from at least 1,999 in 2025 to over 2,292 in 2026 due to dangerous conditions and unseaworthy vessels departing from Libya’s coast. The IOM called on European nations to address rising right-wing pressure by creating legal migration pathways and reducing migrant risks, as the EU recently approved new rules allowing deportations outside its borders in June 2026.
