The Canadian Liberal government has moved closer to purchasing advanced radar planes from Saab, a Swedish defence company, for the Royal Canadian Airforce (RCAF). In a recent non-binding agreement, Ottawa agreed on a term sheet with Saab that will facilitate more detailed negotiations regarding the acquisition of GlobalEye aircraft. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced at a defence expo in the spring that Canada had chosen Saab as its preferred supplier for airborne early warning and control planes, but this decision is not yet final. Meanwhile, opposition Conservatives have requested an investigation by the auditor general and parliamentary budget officer to ensure that all proper procedures were followed during the selection process. Additionally, Carney's government has yet to decide on a planned acquisition of 88 F-35 stealth fighter jets.
