On Friday, Canada signed a preliminary agreement with Swedish company Saab to acquire six GlobalEye radar aircraft. The non-binding deal establishes the groundwork for further negotiations and is part of Prime Minister Mark Carney's efforts to streamline military acquisitions through the newly formed Defence Investment Agency. Talks between the two parties began on May 27, initially focused on acquiring at least 40 aircraft but were narrowed down to six planes. These radar systems will be built in Canada and mainly used for surveillance in the Arctic region. Alongside the acquisition of these aircraft, Canada aims to secure GlobalEye systems and training, although a timeline has not been finalized. Defence Minister David McGuinty stated that this move will enhance national security and provide value to Canadians. Previously, Canada had considered deals with US companies like L3Harris and Boeing but ultimately chose Saab's offer. The country has recently increased its military defense spending, allocating $65 billion dollars for such initiatives.
