Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko proposed involving the United States in a joint project with Gazprom, Russia’s state-controlled gas company, to build a nitrogen fertilizer plant in Belarus on Tuesday, according to state news agency Belta. This proposal came after Lukashenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to proceed with the construction of the plant. The site for the proposed facility has already been chosen. Lukashenko suggested that the U.S. could contribute technology to the project since it is in need of nitrogen fertilizers; otherwise, Belarus plans to proceed with Russia's Gazprom and sell the products internationally. Belarus has recently sought to improve relations with the United States following years of isolation and Western sanctions against the country. President Donald Trump mentioned on Monday that Washington was negotiating a deal to purchase potash fertilizer from Belarus at a cheaper rate than what it currently pays Canada for similar products.
