Diesel prices in Northern Ireland reached their highest level since the conflict with Iran began, according to data from the Consumer Council. The average price for a litre of diesel was 193.3p over the past week, just below the record high of 197.2p set during the summer of 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Some fuel stations have already reached prices as high as £2 per litre. Prior to tensions escalating with Iran in February, diesel was around 132p per litre. The UK Department for Transport reports that Northern Ireland relies more heavily on diesel than other parts of the country; over half of private cars there run on diesel compared to a third UK-wide. Despite this reliance, sales of new diesel vehicles have decreased significantly in recent years across the UK.
